The brightness or more technically speaking the Luminance of an LCD can be very subjective to the viewer with it being difficult to evaluate brightness unless a side by side test is conducted or scientific instruments are used. The expression "High Brightness" has been used widely with many different interpretations. To an LCD manufacturer this has been something above 350cd/m2. To those involved in dealing with the problems of reading LCDs in "Sunlight" this has always been in excess of 600 to 800cd/m2 , the level where the panel isn't totally "washed out" by high ambient light levels. To those involved in outdoor displays the level is approximately 2000cd/m2 when a panel will be visible in virtually any ambient or incident light. Take a look below at the range of LCD which we believe are suitable for applications requiring a level of Sunlight Readability.

In typical sunlight applications heat build-up can be the biggest killer of any panel. Managing the heat is critical and a simple way to reduce to problem is lower the power required for the LCD. This panel offers a fantastic balance of brightness versus power consumption at a reasonable price point:-
- 1000cd/m2 High Brightness LCD
- WXGA, 1366 x 768 pixels offering 16M Colours
- Ultra-wide viewing angle, 178 degrees H/V
- Less than 110W for backlight power
Low backlight power means lower heat build and in sunlight readable applications this can be the key to success or failure. Customer evaluation of this and 3 other panels resulted in this panel coming out on top for lower power consumption, slimmer depth and better display uniformity. |

We are pleased to announce the availability of this superb LCD panel which is ideal for operation in demanding applications where direct sunlight washes out standard high brightness LCD.
This is a true transflective panel engineered with the reflective film behind the TFT array unlike pseudo-transflective panels with a film added to the front of the LCD. This panel utilises next generation EEF lamps to achieve an amazingly low 130W. power consumption:-
- 1600cd/m2 High Brightness LCD
- 2300cd/m2 with 80KLux direct sunlight
- WXGA, 1366 x 768 pixels offering 16M Colours
- Ultra-wide viewing angle, 178 degrees H/V
- Less than 130W for backlight power

The technology now exists to produce LCDs with customised LED backlights with luminance levels high enough for the image to be seen in virtually any sunlight condition. This technology is highly specialised and we recommend consultation on product design with us. Thermal management is a very significant factor with water cooling and heat exchange elements outside of the display enclosure being the recommended approach:-
- 1500, 2500, 3500 cd/m2 High Brightness LCD options
- also available in different sizes
- customised designs specific to application requirements
These screens are at the cutting edge of Sunlight Readable displays and may be tailored to your specific application. |
